JTF funds $18 million for research projects in the scientific study of religion and spirituality in 2018
The John Templeton Foundation will distribute $18 million for research projects in the scientific study of religion and spirituality in 2018. The 2017 deadline for funding inquiries to the John Templeton Foundation is August 31, 2017. JTF will consider funding inquiries for small grants (<$217,400) and for large grants (>$217,400). Note that the next open-submission deadline (for requests of any size) will not be until August 31, 2018. Visit https://www.templeton.org/grants/apply-for-grant to apply.
JTF funds basic and applied science, and gives grants for up to 3 years in duration. There are no constraints on the nationalities or career stage of the principal investigator or project members. The application process begins with an Online Funding Inquiry (essentially a letter of intent), all of which will be reviewed during September 2017. Applicants who are successful at this first stage will be invited to submit a more detailed full proposal. The process includes peer review and is highly competitive: ~95% of proposals considered in the Human Sciences portfolio are rejected at the first stage and ~50% are rejected at the second stage. GloPent Conference 2018, The Future of Pentecostalism, February 8-9, 2018, Free University, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Call for Papers for the GloPent Conference 2018 on The Future of Pentecostalism, to be held on February 9 and 10, 2018 at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
Keynote speakers: Jon Bialecki, Kim Knibbe and Damaris S. Parsitau
With its growth, global impact, and reach, Pentecostalism has developed into a diverse and established movement of denominations, independent churches, mega-churches, and ministries. Within mainline Christianity, Pentecostal beliefs and practices are now more accepted and are described by some as the ‘Pentecostalization’ of Christianity. This is observed in the acceptance of key practices and beliefs concerning the gifts of the Holy Spirit like divine healing, deliverance, and prophecy. However, Pentecostalism in the context of (late) modernity is more than a success story. In spite of its missionary zeal, Pentecostalism is not immune of decline and apostasy of the second or third generation Pentecostals. Furthermore, science and shifting morals in societies challenge Pentecostal beliefs more broadly which calls for response and engagement with the surrounding context. And due to new media, scandals concerning Pentecostal leaders can no longer be hidden. Together these trends raise a number of questions with regard to the future of Pentecostalism, which will be the overall theme of the GloPent conference 2018 in Amsterdam.
Conference Coordinator: dr. Miranda Klaver m.klaver@vu.nl
Abstracts: abstracts of no more than 150 words and panel proposals should be sent to Miranda van Holland crvanholland@gmail.com before October 10, 2017
