JOHN MBITI’S PERSPECTIVE OF THEOLOGICAL AND MISSIOLOGICAL ISSUES WITH RESPECT TO CHRISTIANITY AND AFRICAN TRADITIONAL RELIGION
    Abstract
In this paper we will examine John Mbiti’s concept of praeparatio evangelica and some of its related issues. While many other arguments may be provided regarding the thriving of Christianity in various contexts, I am advancing the following argument in the context of African Traditional Religion as reflected in the theology of John Mbiti. African Traditional Religion has an affinity for the Gospel. Failure of mission approaches to distinguish between missionary Christianity and the Gospel has led to protracted polemics that impact the Gospel witness. Nevertheless, in spite of this protracted conflict, reflected in cultural clashes, African Traditional Religion, because of its affinity with the Gospel has been a fertile ground for the Gospel to thrive.
