ASC Leiden Visiting Fellowship Programme

The ASC Leiden hosts visiting research fellows in the framework of the Leiden African Studies Assembly (Leiden ASA), a network for cooperation between Leiden based Africanists. Visiting research fellows use their time in Leiden for data analysis and/or writing, often on a joint project with one or more ASCL staff members and with Africanists at other institutes or faculties of Leiden University. A visiting research fellowship is for a maximum of 90 days.

How to apply

Currently, there is an open call for applications for a 90-day fellowship for the period September-October-November 2018. The text of the call and the application form can be found here.

Please complete the application form and send it, together with all required additional documents, to: LeidenASA@asc.leidenuniv.nl Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. Applications must be submitted in English. However, Visiting Research Fellows may pursue their research in any language(s) of their choice, in agreement with their ASCL/Leiden University counterparts. The deadline for application is 31 March 2018.

CfP for Panel 182: The Religion of the Orishas, 18th IUAES World Congress, 16-20 July, Florianopolis, Brazil

 

Between January 8th and February 28th 2018, the registered participants will be able to submit their paper proposal to the 18th IUAES (International Union of Anthropological and Ethnographic Sciences) World Congress at Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Florianopolis, Brazil, and in particular to Open Panel 182: The Religions of the Orishas

The panel is on the religions of the orishas in various contexts – diasporas and re(creation) of African heritage in the sacred space
This panel discusses various links, forms and faces of the African origin religions in the contemporary world. We would like to invite scholars doing their research on the religions of the orixás (orishas) in their different dimensions, such as: ritual, cultural and symbolic production (music, body and dance);function of technology; (re)creation of social relations and connections; relations between religion and gender, sexuality, public policies, context of production of the heritages, intolerances, migration processes and religious transnationalization.

African Theological Advance: Request for Proposals, Round Two

 

Nagel Institute for the Study for the Study of World Christianity at Calvin College, Grnd Rapids, USA, , with generous support from the Templeton Religion Trust, invites project proposals for the “African Theological Advance” initiative. Its aim is to support African Christian scholars, in theology and other disciplines, to engage in fresh research, thinking and teaching about Christianity’s engagement with contemporary African society.

Round 2 of this initiative will make 8 grants between $35,000 and $50,000 USD for two-year research and curricular development projects. These grants are for postgraduate African theological seminaries or university-based postgraduate theology programs. The awards will be for research and curricular development projects that address gospel and culture issues in Africa by drawing on interdisciplinary methods and insights to address one of four topical areas:
• African spirituality and values
• Science and religion—particularly health and healing
• Religious innovation and competition
• Forgiveness, peacemaking and reconciliation

Call for online submission of articles to Alternation

 

Johannes Andreas Smit, editor of the online open access journal Alternation: Interdisciplinary Journal for the Study of Arts and Humanities in Southern Africa, invites submission of articles in the area Religion and Social Transformation in Africa, or on Religion and Social Responsibility in Africa. He shall also consider submissions in important topical issues such Gender, Ecology/Environment, Religion and/ in Education, IT/Social Media and Religion in Africa, and other relevant and topical issues

In March 2018, Alternation will start using the OJS online managing system. Articles may be submitted for publication in Alternation by first registering as author or reviewer (or reader) at ) at http://journals.ukzn.ac.za/index.php/soa/user/register.
